THE IBERIANS

Elche pide su dama | Cultura | EL PAÍS

The Iberians

The Iberian Peninsula was inhabited by different tribes during the Metal Ages, including the Celts, that we have already seen, and the Iberians, who were here before dthe Celts arrived.

The Iberians were the predominant culture of the Iberian Peninsula that inhabited first the east and south-east of Spain and slowly migrated to the interior and west. The Iberians are thought to be a native Mediterranean culture, a local native group.

The Iberians were important during the Metal ages, especially during the Bronze Age. As well as supporting themselves through farming and metalwork, they also traded goods with other Mediterranean cultures. The fact of having contact with other cultures led to developments such as urban settlements. Like the Celts, villages with streets of stone, rectangular buildings were built on hills, with a watchtower for extra protection. Some important goods have remained like great sculptures like the Dama de Elche, the Dama de Baza (both at the MAN Museum in Madrid)  and the Toro de Osuna. They used large rocks to construct megaliths for burials, such as the Cueva de Menga in Antequera (Málaga) or the taulas on the Islas Baleares.

VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE IBERIAN LANGUAGE, THE ONLY THING EVERYBODY AGREES IS THAT IT IS NOT RELATED TO THE REST OF THE EUROPEAN LANGUAGES. LIKE BASQUE LANGUAGE IT WAS ORIGINAL ON ITS OWN.

THE CELTS

The Celts

The Celts spread across Europe during the Iron Age. Those who settled on the Iberian Peninsula lived in the north-west and in central areas. They dwelt in the Iberian Peninsula between 1000 – 300 BC  and spoke a Celtic language.

The Celts mixed with the Iberians and both groups developed in what we call now Celtiberians. Very little remains of the language Celtiberians spoke.

They lived in rural communities. Fortified villages, called castros, were built on hills, a new permanence with stone walls and protective ditches - to prevent surprise attacks. They lived in round houses made of stone and straw.

They were famous for their fierce warrior culture and were very resistant against invaders. They were protected by an elite Celtic warrior class. The Romans, who found them when they invaded, found the Celt warriors to be very independent and courageous in battle and warlike.

Celtic lore of magic and mystery, and the strong bond to nature was very common like in the northern European areas were Celts also dwelt. They worshipped the sun and moon and attached great significance to forests, rivers, wells, and mountains. They practiced similar rituals to those in British Isles and Brittany in France. They venerated especially the oak tree and their worship was carried out in natural sites or clearings rather than temples.

They were into cattle raising on the Iberian plains and hills. They produced their own food through farming and rearing animals. They were also famous for being excellent metalworkers. They created strong weapons, as well as fine jewellery and coins. Archaeologists have found many Celtic structures and artefacts, including iron tools, coins, jewellery and even sculptures such as Los Toros de Guisando.

The buildings housed family and animals together similar to what the Celts did in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales.

METAL AGES

The cultural record of man’s existence is divided into two great periods – the ‘Age of Stone’ and the ‘Age of Metal’. The ‘Age of Stone’ preceded the ‘Age of metal’. The duration of these two periods lasted very differently. The Stone Age persisted far and far greater period than the Metal Age whereas metal came in use only recently. As people learned to find and use more practical metals, their life changed. We can find three distinct “metal ages” that began toward the end of the Stone Age:

The Copper Age (c 2500 - 1700 BC)
• The main change for humans after using stone and bones was the discovery of metals and their uses.
• The discovery of copper and how to melt it resulted in stronger weapons and tools.
• The transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age took experimentation, failure, and innovation, creating a society that actually relied on bronze tools.
• People divided up tasks in their communities: while metal workers made tools and weapons for everyone, farmers produced food for everybody.

The Bronze Age (c 1700 - 800 BC)
• The Bronze Age is the time period when people made tools from an alloy (a mixture of metals) called bronze.
• Bronze is a mixture of mainly copper and tin. People learned how to melt and mix it, giving shape to the mixture.
• They started using bronze weapons and tools that were even stronger than copper ones.
• Bronze tools and weapons soon replaced earlier stone versions.

The Iron Age (c 800 - 280 BC)
• Iron is easy to find, but hard to make into tools. It melts at a higher temperature than bronze. When humans started to know how to make iron tools, they were able to make many of them.
• With more and better tools, people could do harder and better quality weapons and tools  using iron.
• Gold and silver were used to make coins and jewelry.
• People having metals looked rich and wealthy at the time.
• Larger settlements of houses with large hill forts were built for protection.

PREHISTORY

We call Prehistory to anything that happened before the invention of writing. The word comes from the Ancient Greek words προ (pre = "before") and ιστορία (historia = "history"). Little is known about prehistoric people because there are no written records that we can use to study. Finding out about pre-history is done by archaeologist. This means that those people study objects like tools, bones, buildings and cave painting. Pre-history ends at different times in different places when people began to write. Historians divide the Prehistory period into smaller periods, depending on the type of materials and technology that humans used in those times. These are called the Stone Age and the Metal Ages.

_______________________
